The 40th annual New World Festival of the Arts returns to the Manteo Waterfront on August 16 and 17 and in addition to the wide variety of amazing artists who will have their creations on display, we always think it's a great time to celebrate the literary arts as well with a book signing! This year we're pleased to feature one of our top selling books from the last TWO years! Between Tides is the story of Blythe, a woman who lives on Cape Cod in Chatham and is at the end of her days. Blythe was married long long ago to Gil, a man who came and went 'between tides' and who eventually left her to settle and begin a new life (with a new wife) on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Written in dual time format, the novel will satisfy historical fiction lovers as it toggles between the late 1800's when Blythe watched her young husband start disappearing for long periods of time and the early 1940's, when a young girl named Gilly shows up on her door looking for more information about the father she barely knew. I like to tell our customers that if Lisa Wingate (Before We Were Yours, The Prayer Box) and Delia Crawford (Where the Crawdads Sing) had a 'book baby'- this would be it! Angel has received accolades from Publisher's Weekly (one of the notable Indie books of Fall 2021) and authors the likes of Lee Smith and Ron Rash. She got a mention in the New York Times and has also been a regular on the Southern Independent Bookseller's Alliance Best-seller list. So if you're headed to Manteo to take in some awesome art don't forget to pop into Downtown Books to meet Angel- a true literary artist!- and grab a signed copy of Between Tides!
