Giving Back

We are firm believers in giving back to our community and always paying it forward.

Over the years, Duck's Cottage has contributed to a wide variety of causes and organizations. We have donated gift certificates, books and other items to silent auctions for our local schools (like Kitty Hawk Elementary and Nags Head Elementary), events (like the Advice 5 Cents Turkey Trot, Hotline's Festival of Trees and the Elizabethan Garden's Diamonds & Denim dance), charity fund raisers (fashion shows, golf tournaments and barbecues) and just about any other cause we find worthy and can believe in.

We distribute hundreds of publisher's advance reading copies every year. We are not allowed to sell these galleys, so when staff has finished with them, we box them up and find them new homes- we have donated these free books to the Outer Banks Hospital, Outer Banks Hotline, local churches, cancer treatment centers, our senior centers both on the beach and in Manteo, to teachers at our local schools and to many, many others.

Over the Thanksgiving weekend, we encourage people to go BIG and up their drink to a large- for every large drink we sell, $1 is donated to Food For Thought, a local program that ensures school children have something nutritious to eat over the weekend. These are under-privileged children in Dare County who meet very specific selection criteria. The program currently serves 490 children who receive 4 meals and snacks to help with their weekend nourishment. In 2013, Untucked Men's Resort Apparel signed on as a sponsor matching funds raised over the holiday weekend. With another match from Duck's Cottage, the final donation to Food For Thought from our Go Big campaign was over $1,000. This is enough to cover four children for an entire school year.

Both of our stores also have special educator's discount programs that entitle all Dare and Currituck County teachers to an everyday 20% discount. In addition, we offer further discounts to our area schools for classroom sets as well as larger orders. We routinely donate gift certificates to be used within the school system as awards for things like the Poetry Out Loud competition, bookmark contests and more. We are regular advertisers in the Nighthawk News, various school yearbooks, sports and drama programs. We have donated scores of muffins and pots of coffee over the years for teacher appreciation events and Senior breakfasts.

Duck's Cottage is a participant in World Book Night, a national program that seeks to put over half a million books in the hands of light or non-readers on one day, April 23 (Shakespeare's birthday). We serve as both a host bookstore, taking delivery of the 20-book boxes that individuals have signed up to give out; as well as being a book giver ourselves. In 2012, we took our box of The Hunger Games to the Dare County Correctional Center where they were going to be shared with inmates and staff alike. Last year, we handed out The Girl With The Pearl Earring throughout our community.

We have participated in the annual job fair at First Flight Middle School where we show children who like to read and write that they can turn that into a career! We have offered a variety of classes during the lenten After Dark program at All Saint's Episcopal Church which in turn funds their community outreach program. We are always willing to advise book groups on book selections, discussion ideas or ways in which to have a better book club.

We have proudly sponsored the Bluegrass Festival, the Mustang Music Festival and the Town of Manteo's July Fourth fireworks display. We are a sponsor of the Finatic Kayak Co. Fishing Tourney benefitting Project Purple. We have contributed to helping Make-A-Wish make a child's wish come true.

We feel lucky to be able to live where we do and do what we love. Giving back lets us give thanks for this very special life we have here on the Outer Banks.
